H1N1 Flu Vaccine

From what I understand, many companies are requiring the H1N1 flu vaccine as well as the seasonal flu shot, or risk possible termination. What is everyone's thoughts about that?

  1. Seeing as it's a fairly new vaccine I think it's unfair to force people to have it...we have no idea what the long-term side effects of it will be. In Australia, most people who have caught swine flu have only had mild cases, the people that have died from swine flu, or gotten really sick, are those with underlying medical and respiratory conditions, so to force completley healthy people to take it, ot lose their jobs is a little unfair. But that's just me.

  2. I can understand requiring the vaccine when you work in the medical field and are exposed to so many people, and germs. But being forced to get a shot seems a bit big brotherish to me.

and btw, you ARE a runner! It just takes baby steps, if I can do it, you can do it!

  3. I work in a hospital and they are definitely recommending folks get the vaccine. Naturally, with any new medical treatment there are risks though. So I believe people should be informed of what side effects and risks there are, so they can make the judgement to have the vaccine or not.

  4. Yikes! No one should be forced to have this vaccine. It is too new, it is being fast-tracked through, therefore it has not been as thoroughly tested as other vaccines, and no one knows the long-term side effects of it. I think it is dangerous to rush it out and I don't think anyone should be forced to get it. That is an individual judgment call.

  5. Actually, the H1N1 "flu" virus is not "new". They took the regular flu vaccines and changed the virus in them to combat the H1N1 flu strain. However, in my opinion the "regular" flu shot is usually a "somewhat" educated guess as to what strain is circulating that year and then that's the "flu" shot you get that year.

We are not getting the flu shot or the H1N1 shot for that matter, mostly because I want my children to have some kind of immunity to things as they age. We have a shot for EVERYTHING now a days. it's ridiculous if you ask me and really is leading to terrible, terrible epidemics to come.

And in response to your question, No, I do not think people should be threatened with their careers for choosing not to get a vaccine.
